The Informatics Engineering Department (DEI) was formally established in 1997 with the approval of the statutes School of Technology and Management (ESTG), having its origins in the information technology (IT) area existing in ESTG since it came into operation in the school year 1989/90.
The DEI is a functional unit of the ESTG to which are assigned teachers, laboratories and support services related to the Teaching of Computer Engineering. The DEI is responsible for courses in Computer Engineering (EI), Network Engineering and Communications Services (ERSC) and Health Informatics (IS). It is also responsible for teaching various subjects of IT that are part of the curriculum of other courses taught at School of Technology and Management. The activities developed by DEI follow the strategic guidelines set by the organs of School of Technology and Management (Scientific Council, the Pedagogical Council and Board).
The organization of DEI is defined by the statutes of School of Technology and Management in:

To train senior technicians qualified to practice their profession with high scientific, technical, ethical and human relations quality and with the ability to adapt to changing technologies.
Contribute to the creation and dissemination of technical and scientific knowledge in various areas of Computer Engineering.
